Introduction > Getting Started with FrontPage 2000

  Overview

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 is a full-featured Web design application that provides you with all the tools you need to create your own Web page or Web site and get it on to the Web. FrontPage not only makes it easy for you to create your own Web pages and sites, it also gives the ability to test and troubleshoot the site before publishing it to the World Wide Web.

  Introducing Microsoft FrontPage

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 is the most recent version of the popular all-in-one Web designing toolkit. Microsoft FrontPage 2000 lets you create maintain and administer your Website. This Software allows you to create Web pages and build a site consisting of linked pages.

  What's new in FrontPage 2000?

FrontPage 2000 is a substantial upgrade offering an essential new interface several new features and significant enhancement to existing features. FrontPage has been tied directly into Microsoft Office 2000, resulting in not only a consistent interface, but also several new collaborative applications.

The FrontPage Editor
FrontPage Editor, the design staple of past editions, no longer exists as a seprate program. Instead, FrontPage Editor has become the Page view in the single program now called FrontPage.
Cascading Style Sheet (CSS)
Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) support has been improved, as has support for Dynamic HTML. You can now easily create special effects using the DHTML Toolbar Including DHTML events for mouse clicking or double-clicking mouse-overs and page loads.
New Improved Themes
The FrontPage 2000 includes sixty themes and you can assign them to individual pages or the entire web. Furthermore you can edit the components in all themes to your wish or create new once. In the previous FrontPage version you could edit and create themes through a special program available with the Software Development Kit (SDK) but this feature has been incorporated into the Theme dialog of the main program.
Pixcel-Precise Positioning and Layering
The Positioning of specific element of a document is much more precise in FrontPage 2000. You can place elements exactly where you want on the page using a new feature called Pixcel-Precise positioning and layering. Floating positiong lets you position elements so that text and other elements can flow around it while, Z-Positioning lets you layer elements on top of each other. This feature comes from CSS 2.0 (Cascading Style Sheet Version 2.0) specification and only for users who have a CSS 2.0 capable browser.
The HTML View FrontPage 2000 offers an HTML view available with a single click that gives you an easily readable and entirely editable look at the code itself. You can edit HTML, ASP, DHTML and even XML code in this view. You can also specify in this view how you want the code to appear. It is also useful feature for troubleshooting.
The Microsoft Script Editor FrontPage 2000 allows you to be much more closer to the raw HTML than ever before. Related to this idea the inclusion of Microsoft Script Editor a powerful tool that lets you edit JavaScript and VBScript for inclusion in your document.
The Database Result Wizard Database integration has also been improved in FrontPage with some new features. The Database Result Wizard is easier to use than database wizard of the earlier version. It is now a five-step dialog box with several sub-dialog boxes available for advance features.
The Microsoft Chart Wizard Office spreadsheet can be inserted directly into a Web page as well as an office pivot table or chart. The Properties dialog box lets you configure the component precisely. The Microsoft Office Chart Wizard appears in the case of inserting a chart component and it guides you through the selection of data to include in the chart.

  Managing Web Sites

Site management remains the package's central focus. Important addition to the FrontPage 2000 package is a set of collaboration features that allow multiple users to work effectively on the same site. FrontPage 2000 is designed as a multi-author environment in fact and enables multiple users to work on the site at the same time. Another collaboration feature is the workflow report allowing you to assign individual pages in the Web to specific members of the design team.

  A WYSIWYG Web Editor

"WYSIWYG" is the abbreviation for "What-you-see-is-what-you-get". Pronounced wizzy-wig. FrontPage 2000 is a "WYSIWYG" web Editor. In a WYSIWYG software application, what you see on screen while designing the page is good indication of what you will get as an output on the web.
