  Understanding Markup Text

Markup is the process of taking ordinary text and adding extra symbols. Each of the symbols used for markup in HTML is a command that tells a browser how to display the text. Markup languages are a special type of computer language because they are solely concerned with classifying the parts of a document according to their function - in other words, indicating which part is the title of the document, which part is a subheading, which part is the name of the author, and so on.
