  Including Multimedia > Adding Sounds

  Adding Sounds

Adding audio can produce some fun effects. Sounds that play when visitors access a page are called background sounds and can be a short tune or one that plays the entire time a visitor is at the page.

  Some Disadvantages of Sounds

Many of the disadvantages associated with using multimedia elements in general are also associated with using sounds :

Sound files are usually large and load slowly.
Visitors need a sound card and speakers to hear sounds.
Visitors in a corporate environment might not welcome a loud greeting from their computer.

  Sound File Formats

Sounds can be added to your web page by any of the sound file formats like MIDI, AIFF, AU, WAV.

The most common sound file formats used on the Web are Microsoft Wave sounds, basic audio and UNIX audio, and Macintosh audio. Netscape's LiveAudio and Microsoft's ActiveMovie plug-ins should handle all of these formats. These formats are useful for general-purpose sounds, but they are not particularly efficient - they do not usually compress well, and they are not optimized for any one purpose. In contrast, the MIDI format is designed exclusively for musical notes arranged into a song, so MIDI files are very small.

RealAudio format, playable using the RealAudio player or plug-in and the RealAudio server, currently comes in two flavours: 14.4 format and 28.8 format, both are highly compressed using lossy compression algorithm of their owh design.

MPEG audio has become popular on the web mostly because of the internet Underground Music Archive, which uses it for its sound samples. Using MPEG, you can get excellent sound quality without needing enormous amounts of disk space.

In this Excercise, you will learn to use Sound files.

In the <OBJECT> tag, add the audio file name, format, Width and height. Make the autostart value to TRUE.

You can hear the music playing. Click the Play button to listen again.
