Photoshop Basics > Basics of Images

Essentially there are two types of computer graphics namely Vector graphics and Bitmap graphics.

  Vector Graphics

Vector graphics are resolution independent, it gets its form through parametric equations, consisting of an outline and a fill and must eventually be displayed as a bitmap. The image shows a Vector graphic.

  Bitmap Graphics

Bitmap graphics are a quilt of pixels that make up recognizable images. These are also called as Raster graphics.

  The Picture Element Placeholder (PIXEL)

The pixel short for Picture element is the smallest whole unit of bitmap graphics.
A pixel has two distinguishing characteristics. First it has a position relative to that of the other pixels in a bitmap image. The second characteristic is that Pixels have the color capability to measure in bits. A pixel's place in a bitmap image enumerates the resolution of an image. This fractional amount is usually expressed as
pixels per inch (ppi). The resolution actually tells us the number of pixels that are present in an inch.
