Advanced Techniques > Creating Special Effects

  Gaussian Blur

Now to try and observe some of the other options of Blur, undo the changes to the image by pressing alt+ctrl+z. Now click on the Filter menu and select the Blur option. Then select the Gaussian Blur… option. Gaussian Blur dialog box appears with default settings. Change the Radius field in pixels by dragging the slider and click OK. Radius is changed so as to blur the image radially to the required extent.

The image after Gaussian Blur effect is as shown.

  Motion Blur

Imagine a situation where some wind blowing effect has to be given for the picture. In such a case, we can always apply motion blur effects to the picture.

To do this, open the image file and select a portion of the image.
Select the Motion Blur under Blur option of the Filter menu.
In the Motion Blur dialog box that appears, vary the Angle field to specify the angle of motion by rotating the line inside the circle that appears next to the field.
Change the Distance field, which is in pixels, if required. This is set in order to scatter the motion effects across the distance specified by the field.
Click OK to observe the effect.

The image after effect appears as shown.

  Radial Blur

To give a swirl or rotational motion effect, first select a portion of the image using Magnetic Lasso Tool.

Click on the Filter menu.
Select the Radial Blur option under the Blur option.
Set the Amount field to the required value and click OK. If necessary blur methods and quality options can be changed.

The image with the radial blur effect appears as shown.

  Brushes Strokes Filter

We shall now see how to apply effects using the Brush Strokes filter.

To do this, click on the Filter menu.
Select the Brush Strokes filter and then select Crosshatch… from the submenu options available.
Crosshatch dialog box appears. Vary the Stroke Length, Sharpness and Strength fields by dragging the respective sliders and click OK to observe the effect.

The image after applying the Crosshatch appears as shown.
