Layer And Masking > Layer Basics

In the early days, artists used large acetate sheets of plastic, or sheets of material to make up a poster or anything where more than one color or one style of painting is to be used. Each sheet could be of different colors or text or semi transparent color, so as to make up a nice poster or painting. Layers in Photoshop feature is a lot like using those plastic sheets. Where a picture composites of many layers.

The layers used in Photoshop separate elements instead of just separating colors or texts. This makes it easier to remove or edit each element separately if there is a need.

Layers are very useful when creating complex graphics. Especially when the image or graphics might need a minor or major change often.

  Working with Layers

The toolbar in Photoshop does not have any layers option in it. Instead, Photoshop has a Layers palette, which allows us to manipulate or do whatever you possibly can with layers.

The Layer palette is very powerful and provides ways to keep track of all the layers. The Layer palette allows us to do various tasks using the layers.

  Selecting Layer Palette

The Layer palette has to be selected so as to work with it. Let us find out how the layers palette is selected.

Click on the Window menu.

Select Show Layers.

The Layers palette appears in the application.

  Layer Palette Components

The Upper-left corner of the palette provides a drop-down list of different modes. These modes work the same way as the Painting modes.
