  Understanding Selection Tools

There are four selection tools namely the Marquee tool, the Lasso tool, the Magic Wand tool and the Pen tool.

  Marquee Tool

Select the area, for which modifications are to be made. Selecting can be done using the Marquee tools in the Toolbox depending on the type of selected area. The image shows the selection done through the Rectangular Marquee tool.

  Transform Tool

The Transform is used to modify the selected area to either shrink or enlarge the images.
The Transform can be invoked by clicking on the Free Transform in the Edit menu by pressing
Ctrl + T. The image below shows the elliptical green area selected with Elliptical Marquee tool from the toolbox, which is the form of the dotted line. The Transform area is the continuous line in the form of rectangle that touches the four points of the marquee area.

  Layers

Photoshop allows us to organize artwork on separate transparent layers to construct composite images and experiment with various effects. The Layers Palette aids in adding or deleting the layers. In case the Layers palette is hidden, it can be invoked by clicking on the Show Layers menu item in the Window menu. An image can have 99 layers. The background is analogous to the base layer. Each layer has a name with a thumbnail of the image created in that layer.

The image below shows the Layers Palette.
